Turned a weed into fertilizer.
Turned a weed into fertilizer.
Collected half a 55 gallon barrel of spiny amaranth, the same weed I've been pulling out of the beds all season, and packed it into a ferment. Added 20 gallons of my apple lab ferment as the living starter, topped it with water, and weighed everything down so it breaks down without oxygen.
Here's why amaranth. It's not a nuisance, it's a nutrient pump. The plant pulls up potassium, magnesium, iron, and manganese, and it's rich in protein, which means nitrogen. Ferment it down and those nutrients release into a liquid your plants can actually drink.
Logged the whole batch in Ferment, the app I'm building, so I can track how it breaks down and dial it in next time. Every weed here has a job. This one's about to feed the garden.
What weed would you turn into plant food? ๐
