Tilled narrow strips down each side of the tree rows
Tilled narrow strips down each side of the tree rows in the back field and direct seeded into them today. Eight rows running between northern Kanza pecans, honey locust, and heart nut.
Rows one and two got baby's breath, yarrow, and borage. Three and four are Costata Romanesco zucchini, Provider beans, and kale. Five and six went to Connecticut field pumpkin, sunflowers, and giant Swiss chard. Seven and eight are butternut squash, more Provider beans, and kale.
The point is to push these crops hard. No babying. Light pasture disturbance, direct sow, and let the field tell me which plants have the genetics to handle real pressure. Survivors get saved and crossed forward. Multiple generations of selection for vigor in my actual conditions is worth more to me than any catalog promise, and the standouts feed the commercial side too.
This whole strip eventually folds into the silvopasture system as the trees mature. Annuals now, perennial canopy later, animals moving through down the line. Could be a total wash. That is part of the work.
