It seems like every day is planting day at Run-a-Muck. These are Chinese Chestnut hybrids going into one of our air pruning beds, the start of our tree nursery stock for 2027!

Air pruning is one of the quiet powerhouses of nursery work. When the roots hit open air at the bottom of the bed they stop growing and the tree puts that energy into a denser fibrous root mass higher up, so by the time these seedlings move into the field they explode into the soil instead of circling and stalling like a potbound tree.

Chestnuts are one of the most underrated staple crops on this continent. They feed people, they feed livestock, they fix carbon, they hold the slope together. What would you plant if you were starting a food forest from scratch.
